Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects all races, genders, and ethnicities. It begins with a warm feeling of the skin and redness of the face. If left untreated or mistreated, it can advance to red bumps, pus-filled pimples (often confused with acne), skin thickening and in severe cases, enlargement of the nose. Rosacea can also get to a point where even water burns or stings the skin. It can even affect the eyes with burning and itching sensations that cause the eyes to become red or swollen leading to issues with eyesight. It is very serious when it gets to that point and a dermatologist would need to be consulted immediately.
It is very important to know what triggers the rosacea. These can include:
- Heat
- Spicy foods
- Hot beverages
- Exercise
- Skin care or hair care products
- Stress
- Sunlight
- Red wine
- Wind
Try avoiding these things for 7 days and see if your skin begins to look and feel better.
There are many products available on the market these days that help with the management of rosacea. It’s important to be gentle with the skin, apply medications, and treatments and most of all avoid your triggers to keep you skin healthy and clear.
It’s important to note that rosacea clients can indeed receive facials, they just have to be sure it’s from a licensed esthetician who is very familiar with this skin type. Treatments like chemical peels and microdermabrasion are definitely a no-no for rosacea clients as they will make the skin much more sensitive causing prolonged redness and irritation.
Rosacea clients will need to do facials that are cooling and that work gently to smooth any inflammation. After a double cleanse with a milky cleanser, a soothing mask would be applied with ice rollers. Following that, a redness-relief serum would be applied calm down any remaining redness while also allowing the skin to remain moist and supple. Finally the service would be completed with a cooling cucumber toner, proper moisturizer and a zinc oxide SPF specifically formulated for sensitive skin.
Rosacea can be managed with the proper routine of gentle, fragrance-free skincare, avoiding triggers, seeking a dermatologist and facials with a licensed esthetician every 6-8 weeks!
